Coaching it

How to get more from these practices.

See the extra player

The first coaching job is to help players notice the overload: count, scan, then use the free player before the defence adjusts.

Use it quickly

An overload is temporary. Reward fast, simple play that gets the free player on the ball in space.

Then reverse it

Swap roles so players also feel the defending side: how to slow an overload down and protect the area.

Questions

What coaches ask.

What is an overload in football?
An overload is when one team has more players than the opposition in a part of the pitch, such as 3 v 2 on a wing. The aim is to use the extra player to create a clear chance.
