Coaching it

How to get more from these practices.

The first five seconds

What players do straight after losing the ball often decides the next phase. Coach an immediate reaction: press, block the forward pass or drop in.

Press or recover, together

Players should make the same choice. If some press and others drop, the gaps appear between them.

Build it into games

Possession and small-sided games lose the ball many times. Add a rule for the team that loses it, such as winning it back within five seconds.
