Coaching it

How to get more from these practices.

Why ball mastery first

Players who are comfortable on the ball have more time to look up, so passing, dribbling and decision-making are easier to coach later.

Short and often

Ten to fifteen minutes of ball mastery as a warm-up or technical block builds comfort faster than one long session a month.

Both feet, every surface

Ask for both feet and different surfaces of the foot. A simple rule such as every second turn on the weaker foot adds challenge without slowing the practice.

Questions

What coaches ask.

What is ball mastery in football?
Ball mastery is a player’s control of the ball with every surface of both feet: close control, turns, changes of direction and first touch. It is usually coached with a ball per player so everyone gets a high number of touches.
