Coaching it

How to get more from these practices.

Shorten the distances

Compactness is about the gaps between defenders, midfielders and forwards. Coach the whole group to move up, back and across together.

Follow the ball

The shape should shift as the ball moves. Players furthest from the ball tuck in; players nearest it close down.

Use a smaller area

Practising in a narrow, short area makes players feel what a compact shape looks like and how little space it leaves.

Questions

What coaches ask.

What is compactness in football?
Compactness is how close together a team’s players and lines are. A compact team has small gaps between players, so the opposition has little space to receive and turn.
