How it's set up
This practice is set up in a 50 by 45-yard area, focusing on ball progression through wide areas. We have a 7 v 6 game, with our primary team (Blue) starting in possession. The objective is to build from the back, encouraging full-backs to time their attacking runs based on space availability. If the space is central, full-backs make underlapping runs through midfield; if space is wide, they must overlap beyond the winger. Players must recognise the right moments to support the attack, deliver crosses, or combine in the final third. If the defending team wins possession at any point, they can counter and score in the mini goals.
Key coaching points
- Timing of Runs – Full-backs must time runs to exploit space effectively.
- Decision-Making – Choose underlaps or overlaps based on space and pressure.
- Quality Final Delivery – Ensure accurate crosses, cutbacks, or passes.
