How it's set up
Set up a 50 by 45-yard area divided into three horizontal zones. Defenders are initially restricted to their zones to encourage structure and realistic spacing. A back three builds play patiently, aiming to break lines with passes into two central attacking midfielders (CAMs). Defenders work collectively to block these passes and intercept where possible. If they intercept they simply play back to the deep 3 players and earn a point. If the press is played through and one of the CAM’s receive, they must turn and drive at the back line to create a 3 v 2 attacking scenario, with the objective to combine and finish past the goalkeeper.
Key coaching points
- Timing of pass and movement – arrive in space as pass is played.
- Body shape to receive – open body to play forward quickly.
- Scanning before receiving – check surroundings to identify pressure and forward options early.
