How it's set up

This phase of play focuses on developing the defensive responsibilities of the midfield three and the connection between the top-line press and midfield compactness. The objective is to protect key pockets of space and regain possession in central areas. The practice is set up in a 50 by 45-yard area, which is then split into three zones, with the defending team only allowed to press in the deepest 2 zones. To begin, the ball starts with the opposition goalkeeper. The attacking team aims to progress the ball forward into the final third and score in any of the mini-goals, which replicate a pinned-back defensive line of four. The defending team's objective is to stay compact, remain patient, and set traps to win possession in midfield before transitioning quickly to counter attack. After a goal or if the ball goes out, play always restarts with the goalkeeper.
