Coaching it

How to get more from these practices.

Possession with a purpose

Keeping the ball is the start, not the goal. Many of these practices reward a pass through the middle, a switch or a dribble out, so players learn to keep possession until the chance to penetrate appears.

Size the area to the challenge

A smaller area adds pressure and speeds up decisions; a bigger one gives time to scan and build. Adjust the area, the number of touches or the number of defenders to keep the success rate challenging but achievable.

Coach the turnover

Rondos and possession games lose the ball constantly. Use that: several practices here ask the team that loses it to press straight away, and the team that wins it to keep it or break out.

Questions

What coaches ask.

What is a rondo in football?
A rondo is a possession game where a group of players keeps the ball from a smaller number of defenders inside a marked area, often with players on the outside. It trains passing, movement, scanning and pressing in a small space.
How many players do I need for a possession drill?
It depends on the practice: rondos can work with small groups, while possession games often use a full squad. Each outline shows the player numbers from its Club tags.
Are these practices free?
The practice outlines on this page are free to read, and some practices have a free full video. The full coaching library is in Touchtight Club, which you can try free for 14 days (card required).
