How it's set up
Practice 9 of Theme 46 is a functional practice that focuses on developing attacking movements to penetrate in the final third. We have six attackers set up in a 433 and six defenders setup in a 4231 with a keeper in the goals. The attacking team starts with possession and must try to penetrate through the defenders into the final zone. Defenders cannot retreat back into this zone until the pass has been played through. If defenders win possession they can break to score in any of the two mini-goals. Coaches can stop play at certain points to show players positioning and the options they have available.
Key coaching points
- Penetrative ball between the CB’s to fins strikers run in behind. Quick combinations to release winger in space out wide.
- Wingers come inside for midfielders to make overlapping run. Positional rotation between wingers and attacking midfielders.
- Timing of the penetrative ball through - patience if no option is available
