How it's set up
This phase of play emphasises technical execution and tactical principles during the build-up phase in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Played on a 9v9-sized pitch (50 by 80-yard area), the mini-goal is advanced by 6-yards and the sides tapered inward as this adjustment removes the striker and two wingers from play. The No. 10 starts in the top zone against opposing midfielders, creating a 7 v 4 build-up in the 1st zone. Players work to play out from the back under pressure from the opposition’s front three and No. 10, with the objective to find and use the free pivot, who receives and drives forward. Upon crossing the line, the exercise shifts to a 2 v 2, targeting mini-goals to simulate passes to wingers or the striker. Defenders aim to win possession, if successful, they counterattack by driving across the line toward the opposite goal.
Key coaching points
- Off the ball movement to create angles to receive ( play in the pockets)
- Passing focused on shifting defenders to create gaps to penetrate
- Scan to find the free man directly (pass) or indirectly ( bounce pass with teammate)
