How it's set up
This goalkeeper practice is designed to improve reaction speed and recovery following different finishing scenarios. Set within the 18-yard box, the setup includes two coaches—one positioned wide to deliver low crosses and the other at the edge of the area to take follow-up shots. The goalkeeper must dive to parry the initial cross away from danger, then quickly recover around a central mannequin to face a second shot on goal. The practice can be delivered as an individual session or adapted for a small group. In group formats, fostering a supportive, competitive atmosphere is essential. Encouraging peer praise and recognising effort helps players stay motivated and engaged, promoting both technical development and positive social interaction during the session.
Key coaching points
- Stay light on feet and alert – remain on toes with weight forward to react quickly.
- Low hand positioning and clear sightline – hands set low with eyes focused on the ball to deal with low-driven shots.
- Explosive recovery movement – rise quickly and cover ground efficiently to prepare for secondary efforts.
